Objectives of the Course To bring students the basic knowledge of environmental chemistry in engineering applications
Course Content Environmental Chemistry: Analytical chemistry and quantitative analysis, units, data processing and analysis and analysis results; sample preparation; analysis methods; pH, carbonate system, acidity and alkalinity; Color and blur; Hardness, ion exchange, Iron and Manganese; Solids and conductivity; Dissolved Oxygen and aeration; Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); Chemical oxygen demand (COD); Total organic carbon (TOC); Oil and grease; Theoretical explanations of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Chloride, Fluoride parameters.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1 Understands the basic chemical issues and concepts related to water and wastewater
2 Describes and classifies the data required for the characterization of wastewater.
3 Establishes the relationship between pH, carbonate system, acidity and alkalinity, formulates problems
4 Understands and interprets the difference between color and turbidity
5 Examines and discusses hardness, ion exchange, conductivity and solids. Relates between the topics
6 Understands the origin of organic and inorganic pollution in water. Understands the relationship between BOD, COD and TOC and finds the difference between them
7 Identifies organic and inorganic ions and compounds in water and wastewater, and reveals their relations with each other
8 Evaluates water and wastewater parameters and understands the importance of environmental engineering applications
